Low-scoring draw looks likely
TEAM NEWS
In light of their lengthy injury list, it seemed strange that RB Leipzig’s activity in the latter stages of the transfer window was limited to allowing Dennis Thomalla and Tobias Willers to depart. Fabio Coltorti, Fabian Franke, Terrence Boyd, Niklas Hohenreder and Dominik Kaiser will all miss the visit of Braunschweig, although Yussuf Poulsen is training again. Sebastian Heidinger and Ante Rebic are both doubtful after picking up knocks in a friendly earlier in the week.
Lukas Klostermann and Zsolt Kalmar have been on international duty, while coach Alexander Zorniger will have to do without the suspended Clemens Fandrich after his red card in Matchday 4’s 0-0 draw with FSV Frankfurt.
Braunschweig missed Jan Hochscheidt in the 2-1 home loss to Bochum on Matchday 4, their second defeat in succession. The midfielder’s experience could have been the difference, but his adductor problem means he misses the trip to Leipzig. Swiss Under-21 international Saulo Decarli may come in and shore up the defence, especially as fellow defender Benjamin Kessel looks set miss out after breaking his nose in training on Tuesday.
Another summer signing likely to come into the team in Leipzig is Seung Woo-Ryu, whose pace and direct running have improved the team each time he has been introduced from the bench.
RB Leipzig

Injured/Unavailable: Coltorti (knee), Boyd (knee), Hoheneder (back), Franke (Achilles), Kaiser (thigh)
Braunschweig
Suspended: None
Doubtful: Kessel (broken nose)
Injured/Unavailable: Hochscheidt (adductor)
MATCH PREVIEW
RB Leipzig’s 0-0 draw at FSV Frankfurt on Matchday 4 was a tight affair until the 44th minute, when a red card shown to the visitors’ Clemens Fandrich left them on the back foot. FSV dominated the second half but couldn’t find a goal, thanks in part to the heroics of goalkeeper Benjamin Bellot.
That result means Leipzig are not only still unbeaten, but also yet to concede a goal in their inaugural 2. Bundesliga campaign. Their eight points mean they lie third in the league, and with a Matchday 3 win over Aue and Matchday 1 draw with Aalen already on home soil, they will be bullish ahead of Braunschweig’s visit.
Having lost two on the trot, Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht lamented individual defensive mistakes for the side’s poor form. The side have conceded six goals in their first four games, including the 2-1 home defeat by Bochum on Matchday 4.
Away from home, Lieberknecht’s men have drawn in Dusseldorf and lost in Kaiserslautern, but I would expect their experience and resilience to see them emerge from a low-scoring encounter with a point.
HEAD TO HEAD
Leipzig and Braunschweig have never met before at this level.
