TEAM NEWS
Ingolstadt coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has presided over his team’s rise to second in the league despite the continuing absences of Almog Cohen and Christian Eigler through injury. For the visit of Aalen, he also has Samuel Riegger suspended.
Ramazan Ozcan, Alfredo Morales, Mathew Leckie and Danny da Costa have all been on international duty, so new signing Tomas Pekhart could play a bigger role than his brief debut cameo in the 3-0 Matchday 4 win in Sandhausen. He’ll be competing for a spot in the front three with Leckie, Stefan Lex and Lukas Hinterseer, who have five goals between them.
Aalen coach Stefan Ruthenbeck can again count on a near-full squad after his side rescued a 2-2 draw on Matchday 4 against Kaiserslautern. Only young midfielder Felix Nierichlo, who is suspended, is out of contention to feature in Ingolstadt.
With no international call-ups blighting his planning, Ruthenbeck also watched a mixture of youth and first teamers win a friendly against TSV Nordlingen 3-0. Despite his small squad, he resisted ‘panic buying’ in the last few days of the transfer window.
Ingolstadt
Suspended: Riegger (one match)
Doubtful: None
Injured/Unavailable: Cohen (broken leg), Eigler (knee)
Aalen
Suspended: Nierichlo (three matches)
Doubtful: None
Injured/Unavailable: None
MATCH PREVIEW
Ingolstadt used the international break between their 3-0 win in Sandhausen on Matchday 4 and the visit of Aalen to beat Wacker Innsbruck 2-0 in a friendly. The Sandhausen win was more impressive, however, particularly the fluidity of front three Mathew Leckie (one assist), Stefan Lex (two goals) and Lukas Hinterseer (one goal).
Unbeaten this season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have risen to second in the league with two wins and two draws. Their home record comprises a draw with Darmstadt and an impressive 2-0 win over Furth.
Aalen are a better side on home turf and on Matchday 4 they only drew 2-2 with Kaiserslautern with a contentious late penalty masking a poor performance. They have struggled on the road, with a 0-0 draw in Leipzig and a 2-0 loss in Darmstadt all they have to show for their endeavours.
I would expect those struggles to continue in Ingolstadt, as the hosts’ good form and goal-hungry front three should allow them to dispatch tenth-placed Aalen.
HEAD TO HEAD
Ingolstadt have beaten Aalen twice on home soil, while Aalen won once on their own turf in April 2013. In April 2014, the sides played out a 0-0 draw in Aalen.
